Leeway HIV/AIDS Care: Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Leeway unique in providing care for individuals with HIV/AIDS?
Leeway is unique in its approach to caring for individuals living with HIV/AIDS because it offers a comprehensive continuum of care that addresses not only medical needs but also the social, emotional, and systemic challenges that often accompany the diagnosis. This model is especially important for individuals navigating the effects of stigma, poverty, housing insecurity, and other systemic barriers.
Here’s how Leeway’s integrated services make a difference:
Full Spectrum of Care
Leeway provides a continuum of services that includes:
Skilled Nursing: 30 beds providing 24-hour clinical care, including infectious disease management, short-term rehabilitation, wound care, and palliative care.
Leeway Residential Care Home: 30 Residential Care Beds. Supervised living with medication assistance and case management for residents who no longer need 24-hour nursing.
Permanent Supportive Housing: 41 independent housing units. Long-term, affordable homes across New Haven paired with onsite support services.
Behavioral Health and Chronic Care
Leeway addresses the complex health needs of people living with HIV/AIDS, including:
Behavioral health care for mental health and substance use disorders.
Chronic disease management, recognizing that many residents also live with conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or hepatitis.
Palliative and rehabilitative care, helping residents recover and regain independence
Community Case Management
Leeway’s case management services help residents navigate:
Access to medications and insurance.
Legal and Financial Support
Transportation and employment resources. This support is crucial for individuals facing systemic failings, such as lack of access to consistent healthcare or discrimination in housing and employment.
Trauma-Informed and Stigma-Resistant Approach
Leeway fosters a nurturing, nonjudgmental environment where residents feel safe and respected. This is vital for individuals who have experienced stigma and marginalization due to their HIV status, sexual orientation, race, or socioeconomic background.

What Leeway Is Not
Leeway is not an emergency shelter and does not offer walk-in or same-night beds. We provide permanent supportive housing for people living with HIV/AIDS, available by referral through Connecticut's Coordinated Access Network. If you need a shelter or a bed tonight in New Haven, call 211.
We would rather answer that here than have someone arrive at 40 Albert Street with nowhere to go. Is Leeway an Emergency Shelter? Explains what each of our four programs provides, how to reach each one, and who to call in New Haven for shelter, food, HIV care, benefits, and legal help. For admissions questions, call (203) 865-0068.
