Therapeutic Recreation
Leeway’s Therapeutic Recreation Program
Leeway’s Therapeutic Recreation program provides a variety of opportunities for our residents to develop new leisure skills and interests that may be carried into the community when they return to independent living. The treatment, education, and recreational services are designed to broaden the scope of how residents use their leisure/activity time effectively to enhance their health, functional abilities, independence, and quality of life.
The Recreation staff provides individual, small, and large group activities ranging from arts and crafts, bingo, music entertainment, movies, educational videos, cooking groups, games, pet therapy, and special events/celebrations, through a wide variety of community out-trips.
Residents learn how to better manage their time to help reduce boredom, stress, loneliness, anxiety and depression. The program also creates learning opportunities for enhanced interpersonal skills to improve social functioning, self-esteem, problem solving, and coping skills.
The Therapeutic Recreation department utilizes many of the community’s resources to broaden program offerings, visiting libraries, local parks, museums, performing arts, and seasonal community events. These activities have a significant impact on our residents’ quality of life. Many have never had any access to the arts and the healing benefits they provide until arriving at Leeway. As one of our Alumni stated: Leeway gave me a template for Living. These activities are supported by our generous donors. Help someone find a new template for living a full and meaningful life.
