I lost my mother when I was 20 years old, then my father, younger sister and older brother. I guess you could say I felt sort of lost. My only remaining sibling, my older sister tried her best to help me, but my hard head and quick temper made it very hard for her to help me stop drinking and using drugs And after years of drug use, I learned that I also had the HIV virus, probably from sharing needles.
Eventually, I enrolled in the Methadone Program in South Norwalk, CT, for counseling and the addiction medication Methadone. They also helped me get some HIV care, and to manage my HIV/AIDS medications, but my alcohol and drug binges caused me to forget to take these medications. As a result, my HIV was way out of control, and my blood tests proved it. My counselor suggested going to Leeway to get more help. I agreed, just in time.
All of the Leeway staff, and the other patients were a very big help in my recovery. I worked hard on my recovery, too, and even won an award from the Leeway staff for my efforts. While I was at Leeway, I attended AA meetings in the community, and my doctor and the nurses got my HIV under control pretty quickly.
I must admit I was a little scared when I first came, but everyone is so helpful. I know I can and will survive and really start to live again.
